Services Overview
Services Overview
Our Preferred vasectomy package provides a no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy at a cost-effective rate compared to Vancouver and Kelowna clinics. We use both thermal cautery and surgical staples for vas deferens occlusion. Using the "Open-Ended" vasectomy technique, the testicular end remains open, reducing post-op discomfort. Fascial interposition further ensures long-term sterilization. Our procedure is minimally invasive, causing minimal bleeding, requiring no stitches, and leaving no visible scar. It's convenient, cost-efficient, and fast, taking only 20 to 30 minutes to perform.
We perform newborn circumcisions typically after 14 days after birth, although it can be done up to 8 weeks later. We take the utmost care to make the procedure as gentle on you and the baby as possible. During the procedure, your baby will be gently restrained on a heated board, and we recommend bringing a pacifier and a soft swaddling blanket for comfort. After oral glucose is administered to relax your baby, a local anesthetic is administered at the base of the penis. After ensuring proper conditions, a special clamp is attached to the penis, and the foreskin is removed. The entire procedure takes less than 15 minutes. Post-procedure, your baby will be handed to you for comfort and can be fed immediately in the room. We provide detailed post-procedure instructions and recommend Tylenol for the first 24 hours. Healing takes about 7 to 10 days, during which the tip of the penis may appear red and swollen, with occasional clots and yellow fluid—common and not indicative of infection. We prioritize your and your baby's well-being throughout the process, ensuring a comfortable and relaxed experience. Vasectomy Risks
Vasectomy Risks
The minor complications that can arise are generally short-lived and resolve with ice, rest, anti-inflammatories, and time. Some men report a mild aching sensation in the scrotum for a few hours to a few days after the procedure. With no-needle anesthesia and our no-scalpel technique, the pain is minimized.
You will likely have some aching or other minor discomfort in the day or two after your procedure, but you can be sure that our gentle vasectomy procedure supports an optimal result with the least amount of post procedural pain.
Circumcision Risks
Circumcision Risks
The most common complications associated with circumcision are post operative bleeding and adhesions. Luckily these complications are extremely rare.
Benefits
Cost
Considering the cost of birth control ($450 for an IUD every 4 years, $400 for the “pill” every year) vasectomy is an inexpensive form of permanent contraception. Not to mention the long-term cost of an unplanned pregnancy! Our cost is less than half of our competitors in Vancouver and Kelowna.
Effective
Vasectomies are permanent and one of the most effective means of contraception. Some studies show vasectomy is more than 99.9% effective in preventing pregnancy.
Convenience
We know how important your time is, that's why we offer a same day consultation and procedure. The procedure is virtually pain free, takes only 20 to 30 minutes, and has only 24 to 48 hours of down time post procedure. It is performed in our private state of the art clinic.
Conventional Vasectomy Procedure
- 1
Anesthesia & Preparation
A conventional vasectomy numbs the scrotum and vas deference with a local anesthetic, using a needle. Not only is this more uncomfortable, but it also increases the risk of complications, like inadvertently puncturing blood vessels that can cause bruising and potential hematoma.
- 2
Procedure
Following anesthesia, the surgeon makes two incisions in the scrotal skin using a scalpel. This exposes the vas deferens, which are individually sealed using sutures.
- 3
Closure
Closure of the large incisions with sutures extends recovery time and necessitates follow-up appointments for suture removal.
Our Vasectomy Procedure
Our approach combines both thermal cautery and surgical staples or “clips”, ensuring highly effective occlusion of the vas deferens mucosa. Using the "Open-Ended" vasectomy technique, the vas tube is left open at the bottom end, reducing postoperative congestion and discomfort, as there's no sudden pressure buildup to the testicles. This doesn't increase the risk of pregnancy, as the other end of the vas is cauterized and closed with a surgical staple.
Our Circumcision Procedure
Before the newborn circumcision, no fasting is required, and it's recommended to feed your baby as usual. There is no fasting needed for the procedure. Additionally, giving your baby 1 ml of Tylenol one hour before the procedure will help with pain management. At the time of the procedure we will give your baby concentrated glucose drops orally. This will relax your baby and also work as additional pain relief.
Benefits
Easier hygiene
Circumcision makes it simpler to wash the penis. However, boys with uncircumcised penises can be taught to wash regularly beneath the foreskin.
Decreased risk of UTI's
The risk of urinary tract infections in males is low, but these infections are more common in uncircumcised males. Severe infections early in life can lead to kidney problems later.
Decreased risk of penile cancer
Thanks to Canada's vaccination policy around HPV, the risk for cancer of the penis is increasingly rare, but it is still less common in circumcised men. In addition, cervical cancer is less common in the female sexual partners of circumcised men.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a vasectomy a permanent form of contraception?
Vasectomies are permanent and one of the most effective means of contraception. While reversal is possible, it cannot be guaranteed to be successful.
Will the vasectomy procedure be painful?
The area of the procedure is completely numbed with local anesthetic and you won’t feel the procedure itself. Most men experience only mild discomfort for a short time after the procedure. Thanks to our no-needle, no-scalpel techniques, the procedure itself is virtually painless.
Are there any life-threatening complications associated with vasectomies?
No, there are very few complications associated with vasectomies. The complications are generally minor and can be managed with appropriate care.
When can I resume normal activities after a vasectomy?
We generally recommend you rest the day after the procedure. Most men can return to work and light activities within a couple of days. Strenuous activities should be avoided for a week or so.
Is circumcision painful for the baby?
We use a combination of techniques to minimize the pain. In Babies, we use Tylenol and oral glucose before the local anesthesia. Once the local anesthetic has kicked in there is no pain during the procedure. Babies may cry initially due to restraint but often settle quickly. The first 24 hours after the procedure is the most uncomfortable, that's why we recommend 24 hours of Tylenol every 4 to 6 hours.
At what age can newborn circumcision be performed?
Newborn circumcision is typically done between 8 and 14 days after birth, but it can be performed up to 8 weeks after birth.
What can I expect in terms of post-circumcision healing?
Healing usually takes up to 10 days. The tip of the penis may be red and swollen for about a week, with occasional clots or yellow fluid, which are normal and not signs of infection.
Are there any potential complications of newborn circumcision?
Complications are rare but can include mild bleeding & formation of adhesions (this is extremely rare), scrotal hematoma, infection, and very rarely, Post-Circumcision Pain Syndrome.
Are circumcisions covered through the BC Medical Service Plan (MSP)?
Unfortunately in Canada circumcisions are considered a cosmetic procedure and are therefore not covered under the Medical services plan (MSP).
